判决下来，立即执行。被告胸前挂着书写罪名的木枷，骑着秃马游城示众，鼓手、号手左右各一在前开路。
骑着秃马的梦想家在鼓号手的开道下游行示众。市民们闻声赶来蜂拥街头，见此情形大笑不已。孩子们则紧随其后，招摇过市。梦想家早已乐不可支，抬眼扫视人群。他以为胸前的木枷乃是国王的祝福，骑马示众是种殊荣。
突然，他在人群里见到一位同样来自沙漠的人，于是欣喜若狂，高声呼喊道：“朋友！朋友！这是何地？这座遂人心意的城市叫什么？究竟是哪个民族如此慷慨热忱？他们在宫殿里为一个异乡人设宴，王子亲自作陪，国王在他胸前挂上牌匾，为他敞开这人间天堂的大门。”
沙漠的朋友没有作答，只是微笑着轻轻摇了摇头。游行的队伍继续前进。
梦想家高昂着头，欣喜的光芒在他眼中闪耀。
